Using cellular routers for these types of field applications gives industrial utility companies the flexibility to cost-effectively place a network connection anywhere it is needed, providing high-speed and secure connectivity. Replacing traditional meters can be expensive and there is no economical way to remove a failed communications component and insert a new component. However, even the oldest meters have alternative connectivity options built into them such as a serial and/or Ethernet port.
