Implementations Span Variety of Environments and Applications
MINNETONKA, Minn., July 28, 2015 – Digi International®, (NASDAQ: DGII,
www.digi.com), the M2M solutions expert, today highlighted how its products are impacting smart city initiatives worldwide. Recognized as an innovator, Digi has been a driver of bringing purpose-built, mission-critical M2M solutions to the market for 30 years. Within smart city projects, Digi technology is enabling new operational efficiencies, reduced response times and new levels of citizen services.
Key examples of Digi smart city implementations include:
Electrical car charging stations
AddÉnergie: AddÉnergie is the Canadian leader in smart charging solutions for electric vehicles (EV). The company develops, manufactures and operates charging solutions for all market segments and is the provider of the charging infrastructure for the Electric Circuit and the VERnetwork™, the two largest charging station networks in Canada. AddÉnergie turned to Digi to assist in providing the wireless capabilities to help the VERnetwork and the Electric Circuit serve EV drivers and charging station owners with customer service, access control, payment and energy management. With Digi’s products, AddÉnergie was able to develop innovative charging infrastructures featuring a wireless network that could monitor a wide area (parking lots) in a busy urban environment, provide connectivity to each charging station and interface with a third-party energy management system. Through the system, drivers can use an access card to connect vehicles to charging stations, facilitate payments and receive email notifications when the charging is complete as well as a summary of their session. Additionally, operators can monitor charging stations for preventative maintenance and use the PowerSharing™ and PowerLimiting™ software, interfaced with Digi products, to notify the charging stations when energy should be lowered.
Automated street lighting
CIMCON Software : CIMCON, a leading developer of automated street light control systems, needed a rugged solution to connect island street lights and remote electrical monitoring re-closures across the entire island of St. John (U.S. Virgin Islands). CIMCON turned to Digi for a wireless solution that could traverse great ranges and dense brush as well as prove reliable under severe weather conditions. Digi solutions connect more than 650 Street Light Controllers (SLC’s) to monitor pertinent electrical parameters and control the light in a variety of ways – dimming lights during peak consumption hours or setting schedules to conserve energy. Additionally, the system can eliminate non-essential physical inspections by sending alerts only when required, greatly reducing maintenance costs. In addition to street lighting control, the solution enables smartphone applications to allow customers to set up alarms and receive notifications regarding energy consumption and faults – improving customer satisfaction and reducing energy consumption. CIMCON is using Digi based on its industry-leading products, ease of use and complete confidence they would prove reliable under the severe island conditions.
Solar powered trash compactors
Bigbelly Solar: Bigbelly provides solar-powered waste and recycling systems currently deployed in municipalities, universities, corporations and healthcare organizations throughout the United States and more than 47 countries worldwide. Bigbelly turned to Digi Wireless Design Services to design the technology platform to connect solar-powered trash and recycling compactor sensor units for real-time, wireless communications of station status and alerts for pickups. The system allows sanitation departments to manage their entire portfolio of waste and recycling stations. Digi has been instrumental in the implementation of the first widespread public space recycling programs in cities such as Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston.
Bicycle sharing system
Tel-O-Fun: Operated by FSM Ground Services Management, Tel-O-Fun provides a bicycle-sharing system in Tel Aviv, Israel with more than 1,700 bicycles spread over 170 docking stations. Digi solutions are used as part of each docking station terminal, where users can purchase subscriptions, rent, obtain and return bicycles. In order to identify a customer and release a bike for use, every terminal must be connected to the main control center and be able to process payment transactions. Digi wireless technologies provide reliable and fast communications rugged enough to withstand Tel Aviv's summer temperatures (40° C / 104° F) and high humidity as well as avoid costly roadwork involving council permits and road disruption. Tel-O-Fun chose Digi based on its ability to deliver relentlessly reliable connectivity and flexibility to scale with future needs.
“Digi wireless devices work at the intersection of all sorts of smart city deployments – whether it’s traffic, lighting, energy, transportation or waste management,” said Jeff Liebl, vice president and chief marketing officer, Digi International. “Digi products have proven themselves in nearly every environment and form function to enable a new generation of wireless-centric smart city projects.”
