Thermal Camera Industry Standard Raised with the ConnectCore 6

"The ConnectCore 6 gave us the ability to build in everything this incredibly high-powered camera needed, without adding weight or product design complexity."

Göran Rohlin, system architect, FLIR

FLIR builds professional thermal cameras that are used for imaging to monitor and track the eco-friendliness of residential and commercial buildings. With FLIR equipment, thermographers, buildings diagnostics persons, real-estate agents, state agents and contractors can see hot spots—or areas where heat is escaping from the building—easily and process reports quicker than ever before.

FLIR set out on a 50 year journey to create the world’s most desired thermal camera. Born out of five decades of infrared expertise and a keen understanding of the experts’ needs, FLIR's new T1K had to offer outstanding infrared performance without compromise. FLIR’s mission was to redefine the limits of infrared imaging and to make users’ workdays easier by finding hidden hot spots faster and taking key measurements more accurately—making the person using the camera the hero.

Business Challenge

A camera of this capability is no small request. A thermal camera is often a large and heavy device, meaning it can be a burden to carry and use. But FLIR knows their customers have no time to waste and no time for errors.

FLIR developed this new technologically advanced handheld thermal camera based on Digi advanced market leading SOM technology.

FLIR’s new T1K/T1020 camera is a high-end infrared camera that captures both still images and video footage. It’s FLIR’s highest-end, most complex product, and it came to market with the Digi ConnectCore® 6.

With the ConnectCore 6, an ultra-compact and highly integrated system-on-module (SOM) solution based on the Freescale i.MX6 Cortex-A9 processor family, FLIR was able to integrate several modules and circuit boards into one module, greatly simplifying the design. This made the camera less complex to build and more compact for users.

“The ConnectCore 6 gave us the ability to build in everything this incredibly high-powered camera needed, without adding weight or product design complexity,” explained Göran Rohlin, system architect, FLIR. “The ConnectCore 6 brought the long standing vision of this camera to life.”

Results

The state-of-the-art T1K/T1020 is truly a game changer. It is the most compact, highly featured Thermal Imaging camera on the market today, and FLIR is set to be the market leader with this product.

It’s demonstrated the capability of Digi SOM technology and enabled both parties to explore future collaborations for a wider range of lower cost yet feature-packed products.
